The sailing year is never complete without the announcement of the nominees for the Rolex Yachtsman and Yachtswoman of the Year Award. The esteemed winner of US Sailing’s 2009 Rolex Yachtsman of the Year Award is Bora Gulari and Anna Tunnicliffe has been named the US Sailing’s 2009 Rolex Yachtswoman of the Year Award. While the winners have been named, they are yet to be honored with the award and a specially engraved Rolex timepiece at the New York Yacht Club in Manhattan on February 26, 2010. Bora Gulari was chosen from a list of 10 nominees, who were then evaluated by a panel of sailing journalists for their competitive achievements in the calendar year of 2009.

Bora Gulari has been lucky enough to win the award on his debut appearance in the list of nominees. Bora Gulari was overwhelmed by the win and took the opportunity to thank his friends, family, boat owners, the Bayview Yacht Club, fellow sailors, and the forward-looking awards Panel. Bora Gulari was introduced to windsurfing at the age of four as both his parents were sailors. The CST Composites International Moth World Champion had a late start in dinghies during his college days and thereafter went directly in the crew position in a 49er campaign at the 2004 Olympics. One of the best performances of Bora Gulari’s team was when they claimed victory in 2002 at the class’ North American Championship. Bora Gulari set his eyes on a Moth after he read an article by Rohan Veal about the foiling Moth. His obsession for speed made him shift focus towards the Moth and finally set a new speed record of 30.31 knots, which broke the previous speed record of 27.9 knots that stood for nearly three years.

The panel had a tough choice in front of them as nine of the ten nominees had won a world championship title. However, Bora Gulari emerged the winner as 10 out of the 14 panel members gave him their first-place vote recognizing his growth over the past two years from square one in the Moth to winning the CST Composites International Moth World Championship in 2009. Bora Gulari also claimed the credit of becoming the first American in 33 years to have claimed the class’ world title and that too in just his second attempt. The Moth, which is a development class, has been in existence since 1929. Bora Gulari’s winning ways include conquering the Harken McLube Moth Pacific Rim Championship along with taking the second place finish at the Moth U.S. National Championship as well as the U.S. Pacific Coast Championship. Bora Gulari has also been a member of the winning teams at the Audi Melges 20 Miami Winter Series Event No. 1, and the Muskegon Yacht Club One Design Regatta as well as the Bayview Yacht Club North Channel Race, both in the Melges 24s. Bora Gulari was also successful in securing a first-place finish at the Sperry Top-Sider Detroit NOOD, the CYC Race to Macinac, Bayview Mackinac Race and the Super Mackinaw Race while racing in the Phil O’Niel’s Natalie J.
